Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.
Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep I away.
Some commentators agree Song of Songs also called Song of Solomon belongs to Biblical wisdom literature. The book reveals love as well as wisdom, both gifts of God. Accepting these gifts with a thankful heart was a celebration of God’s gracious gifts. Three dominant statements were made: love is strong, it does not yield and like nature, it is an invincible force. Seals were an important part of their culture. Genesis 38:18a, “He said, ‘What pledge should I give you?’ ‘Your Seal and its cord are the staff in your hand.’” Love is a force stronger than water. God’s love never changes. God is the lover’s dream.
Married almost forty-seven years we have experienced ups and downs along the way. The one thing that remains is our commitment to each other. Unlike many our age, we did not say, “for better or best.” We said for now and forever. We married for “the good, bad and ugly.” Yes, there have been times when the going got really tough, but I was confident our love would daily stand the test of time. Knowing God, His love’s my plumb line.
