Exodus 17:2a, 6c-7 NIV 2011
So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”
So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
The Lord provided the Israelites manna and quail to eat on their journey. When there was no water, they demanded that Moses give them water. Once again they forgot who was their Shepherd. Psalm 95:7a, “For he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care.” When the going got tough, they returned to their hard hearted ways. Psalm 95:8, “Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah, as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness.” God desires His redeemed people to rely on Him.
Don’t take God for granted. Don’t abuse His grace. Don’t test His patience. These are my take-aways from this passage. Easy to type but this needs to be my daily reminder. He’s with me no matter what is going on in the world around me. After a text from my niece this morning, I went to the Lord immediately in prayer. I then asked several prayer partners to pray with me. I will continue to pray until she updates me again. As His redeemed I must rely on God.
How will we remember to rely on God today?
