Philippians 3:13-14NIV 2011

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Paul knew he could never forget who he was before he met Christ on the road to Damascus. His past made him the man he was and Christ knew him, warts and all. Acts 9:5, “‘Who are you, Lord?’ Saul asked, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting,’ he replied.” Jesus forever changed Paul’s life. Paul persevered whatever was ahead, he knew God was in control. Romans 8:28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Jesus’ forgiveness encourages believers to look toward the future.

Everything that has happened in my past can’t be erased. What I can do is learn from it and move ahead and look forward. None of us is without history be it the good, the bad or the ugly. By looking at Paul’s example, we have a model of a man with a mission. He didn’t allow his past to cloud what Jesus called him to do. I love reading through his letters filled with wisdom for me as I serve the Lord. Forgiven, daily I’m looking toward my eternal future.

How does Jesus help us look ahead?

Called heavenward together,
