Romans 8:2, 12:1 NIV 2011
Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God.
Paul was never ashamed of the gospel. Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes.” The Holy Spirit gives life to all who believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ. The power of sin leads to death but through Jesus Christ, sinners are set free. The first eleven chapters of Romans lay out God’s mercy given through the sinless sacrifice of Jesus Christ for sinners. The Holy Spirit lives within the heart of all believers. Complete surrender pleases God.
During a BSF leaders meeting someone said, “The only problem with being a living sacrifice, we tend to wiggle off the altar.” To this day I still remember it and pause each time I read Romans 12:1. I recall all the times I’ve surrendered “it all” only to take it up a short time later. Reflecting reveals I’m a work in progress. I forget I’ve been set free and daily make many of the same missteps. I’m not perfect. Pleasing Him with complete surrender is my priority.
How can we offer ourselves as living sacrifices today?
Surrendering all to Jesus,
