Proverbs 4:20-23 NIV 2011
My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows fro it.
The book of Proverbs was authored by wise men including King Solomon. Fearing God and living wisely was it’s literary focal point. With the temple complete and dedicated, the Israelites were seeking wisdom anywhere other than from God. The author was speaking as a father or parent to his son. Proverbs 1:8, “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” Psalm 34:11, “Come, my children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.” Listen up! A healthy heart is filled with Truth. Believers keep God’s Word guarded in their hearts.
Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” I remember reading and marking this Scripture in my RSV Bible during our Sunday school study of the Sermon on the Mount. I hear my teacher reminding us, “Knowing God’s Word helps us hide it in our hearts.” With the seeds of God’s Word hidden in my heart, they’ll grow. Living a life that reflects Him, God’s Word is living in me.
How does guarding our hearts keep us focused daily on Him?
