Revelation 2:23, Philippians 4:7 NIV 2011
I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
John’s book of Revelation was written to encourage God’s faithful during persecution. Christ’s words to the church in Thyatira are a warning to them regarding their tolerance of false teaching. Paul wrote the same words to the church in Rome. Romans 8:27a, “And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit…” Paul gave the Philippians assurance that God’s peace came through Christ. He drew a picture of God “standing guard” like a sentinel on all who are in Christ. Christ searches and God guards the hearts and minds of every believer.
During a conversation this evening, the two of us had the same thought; “God has a purpose for that person.” Because His ways are far above our ways, His purpose is perfect. When I rest in Him, confident He is in control of my life, my days are much smoother. Even when there are bumps in the road I need to remember who knows me better than I know myself. Since choosing to follow Jesus He knows my mind and God stands sentinel over my heart daily.
How does God standing guard bring peace?
