Ephesians 4:31 Hebrews 12:15 NIV 2011
Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.
See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
Paul consistently called believers to remain close to Christ. Romans 1:29a, “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity.” Colossians 3:8, “But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.” Humans will get angry but holding onto that anger leads to bitterness. Ephesians 4:22, “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires…” God forgives believers that confess the sin of bitterness.
Full disclosure, these two Scriptures have been great reminders for me today. I’ve been dealing with some frustration with a family member that’s grown into bitterness and anger in my life. This is precisely why writing daily keeps me on the straight and narrow. God continues to show me I can never lead anyone any further than I’m willing to go myself. I must get rid of the bitterness that may be slow to die.The Lord wants me to leave it at the foot of the cross and accept His forgiveness.
