Romans 12:10-13a NIV 2011
Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need.
The love Paul spoke of is meant to be genuine, sincere and pure like the love believers received from Jesus. God’s love is genuine. Psalm 133:1, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity.” Paul reminded the faithful to expect the Holy Spirit to be active in their lives. Their joy, hope, patience and faithful prayer exhibited would draw others to love Christ. Sharing in the everyday lives of God’s people would give each of them the support needed when tough times began. God’s love is the perfect model for believers to genuinely love others.
The pastor from my sister’s church preached on this passage a year ago. He challenged us to choose at least three people to tell them how much we loved them. That day it was easy as I told my sister and two nieces how much I loved them. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 13:1 say it best. I’ve incorporated them when I try to connect with friends I’ve not been with for a while. With God’s perfect love model the Spirit prompts my genuine love toward others.
