1 Corinthians 8:1-3 NIV 2011
Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that “We all possess knowledge.” But knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know. But whoever loves God is known by God.
Paul addressed the debate within the church regarding food that was sacrificed to idols. He offered great detail in verses 4-13 regarding what puffs up and what builds up. They needed to check their actions. Their knowledge was limited while God alone knows all, Romans 11:33, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!” Paul responded in 15:14, “I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness.” Romans 8:29, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.” God knows those who love Him through day-to-day actions and deeds.
“Actions speak louder than words, but not nearly as often.” This quote from Mark Twain was one I used a lot as one of six. I would omit the last portion but loved the first. I also loved Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:37 NKJV, “Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ I need to daily make sure what I am saying matches what others see me doing. God knows my heart but I need to live like I belong to Him.
Does knowledge lead to pride or love?
