Genesis 9:13, 17 NIV 2011
“I have set my rainbow in the cloud, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.”
So God said to Noah, “This is a sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
This was God’s divine covenant made with Noah that is perpetual and unconditional. It was made with Noah, a righteous man. Genesis 6:9b, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and walked faithfully with God.” God would remember His covenant. Genesis 9:16, “Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on earth.” This covenant revealed His mercy and continued commitment to His people. The rainbow is a sign of God’s mercy to all saved sinners.
Seeing a rainbow is a vivid display of God’s grace and mercy available to all. Spending my last years of high school north of Seattle those rainbows were always in great supply. I remember one afternoon in the summer looking to the southeast at majestic Mount Rainier after the rain. There for all to see was God’s promise covenant rainbow for all to see. Pausing today when one appears still takes my breath away. Why would God do that? Because He is God, giving us a promised sign of His mercy.
How will we thank Him daily for His promises?
