Isaiah 61:1 NIV 2011
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.
Though this verse might refer to Isaiah, it is more a reference to Jesus, the Messiah. Luke 4:16-20, Jesus went to the synagogue and “read the scroll of the prophet Isaiah,” this verse. He told them in Luke 4:21, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Just as God called Isaiah to lead His people, Jesus came to be the Great Shepherd of all. God’s Word is the template for all to learn who He is, why there is need for a Savior and His gift of the Holy Spirit. God’s Word requires a response after reading.
Being able to read God’s Word daily is a privilege I’ve had all my life. Not so for many when I was young, living in the USSR, China or other places where Bibles were banned. Today there are still places where those who follow Jesus are persecuted and not allowed to own Bibles. God’s Word, though translated many different times still remains the sixty-six books of Holy Scripture without error and the final authority of faith for believers. Sharing God’s Word is what we do in our actions and deeds; it is what God wants.
Where will we share God’s Truth?
