Ezra 2:68-69 NIV 2011
When they arrived at the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, some of the heads of the families gave freewill offerings toward the rebuilding of the house of God on its site. According to their ability they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver and 100 priestly garments.
Exodus 25:1-2, “The Lord said to Moses, ‘Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering…from everyone whose heart prompts them to give.” The Israelites returning to Jerusalem after exile made their offerings and included “priestly garments.” They gave what they could to rebuild the Lord’s house. One commentator wrote, “Thus a mina would be the equivalent of five years’ wages.” Nehemiah’s account of their return is recorded in Nehemiah 7:70-72 included all those who gave: the governor, the heads of families and the rest of the people. God’s family faithfully gives.
Tithes and offerings are actions woven throughout the Old and New Testament. Reflecting on what the Father has given us, we should graciously give back all that we can. He owns and is the source of everything. I heard someone say, “You didn’t build that!” I thought, “You’re right. We didn’t build this but God did!” He is the Maker of everything. Aside from Him, I have nothing. He gave us the Greatest Gift over two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ. That is why we give back.
What ways do we faithfully give?
Daily giving with thankful hearts,
