Luke 12:6-7 NIV 2011
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Luke 12:1b, “Jesus began to speak first to his disciples…” He offered warnings along with encouragement to the disciples and the crowd that gathered. Being transparent, Jesus challenged them to look beyond the present toward eternity. Though the tiny birds were sold cheaply, God cared for them. Jeremiah was set apart to be the Lord’s prophet, Jeremiah 1:5, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart…” God cares for His people, Psalm 139:13, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” Faith in Jesus comes through trusting God cared so much that He sent Jesus to save sinners.
The first solo I can remember hearing was in 1961 at our Baptist Church in Seattle, “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” The author drew from both Luke and Matthew for her words in the chorus, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” This is precisely what Jesus emphasized above. I need to look up and know He sees everything I do. God cares for me and knows my heart. I‘ve been entrusted to be about His business daily.
Where is He calling us to serve?
His trusting servants,
