John 8:31-32 NIV 2011
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Chapter eight of the Gospel of John is part two of Jesus at the Festival of the Tabernacles. These two verses reveal yet another dispute the Jews had with Jesus. There were some who professed to believe He was whom He said He was. The words they spoke in verses 33 and 37 show they had not really accepted Him as the Messiah. In verse 12b Jesus gave them a true statement, “I am the light of the world.” Jesus Christ is the Light of the World. Following Jesus’ truth believers are set free, able to live for Him and receive God’s eternal rewards.
There are times I am with people who feel they are free to do what they want. It makes me wonder from what exactly are they free? I know the freedom I have in Christ came at a great price. And the freedom I have as an American came at a personal price many were willing to pay with their lives. But the truth I was given in Christ led to my salvation which gives me freedom daily from the bondage of sin. As a follower of Christ I know the truth and the truth has set me free, indeed!
How will I respond to His truth today?
