Psalm 36:5-7 NIV 2011
Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
David, possibly in need of protection, wrote this prayer reflecting upon God’s unfailing protection. Hi began by contrasting those who trust in themselves and how he had experienced God’s faithfulness. David trusted the Lord because he saw over and over again He alone was trustworthy. Psalm 57:3, “He sends from heaven and saves me…God sends forth his love and faithfulness.” God is a part of everything. He protects and loves His covenant people. The Lord loved David and consistently covered him. Psalm 17:8, “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.” God’s love is believer’s unfailing refuge.
Many times in the past six years we have had to take refuge in the basement when the tornado alarms go off on our phones or TV. Huddled together we wait for notification the danger is over. Following Jesus, I’ve found refuge in God’s Word and reflecting on all the times I’ve seen His hand in “stressful” situations. Like David, I’ve learned through personal experience God is trustworthy. Though His ways are never my ways, His unfailing love is my refuge.
When did you last take refuge in Him?
