John 3:4-5 NIV 2011
“How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born.”
Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”
Nicodemus came to Jesus with questions about being born again. He was a Pharisee, an important religious leader that knew the Scripture. After hearing Jesus speak, something was missing. He questioned being “born again.” John 1:12, “Children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.” Jesus wanted him to know it was not a physical birth. Titus 3:5, “He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.” Christians are born again by choosing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
During a church service one early spring our oldest daughter walked forward at the end of the church service as a profession of her faith in Christ. It was a momentous moment for this mother. A preteen walking to the front of the church can be daunting but she did it anyway. Saved she followed Jesus in the waters of baptism and began to walk faithfully with Him. That walk is not always an easy path. We are born again the day we choose Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
