Colossians 3:1-3 NIV 2011
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.
Paul’s words to the Romans challenged them to allow God to change their hearts. Romans 12:2a, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The first step to that transformation began with their hearts and minds focused on Jesus. When that took place, the pull from the world paled in comparison. Philippians 3:20, “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Hidden with Christ, sinners must first die to self. Salvation brings new life in Christ Jesus.
When I get to this part in Colossians I immediately turn back to Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” The Lord wants me to remember this daily. Why am I here and what does the Lord want me to do with what He’s given me? Paul’s words in Philippians 4:13 give me that direction, “I can do all things through him who gives me strength.” Looking toward His eternal reward keeps me grounded and focused on living for Him.
How do we die to self?
