Psalm 80:3, 7, 19 NIV 2011
Restore us, O God; make your face shine on us that we may be saved.
Restore us, God Almighty; make your face shine on us that we may be saved.
Restore us, Lord God Almighty; make your face shine on us that we may be saved.
Psalm 80 is a devoted prayer asking God to restore His people. Three requests were made for the Lord to once again shine His face upon them. They were aware they’d wandered far from the Lord but knew God could save them. Psalm 70:20, “Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again…” The Lord was their only hope. Psalm 85:4, “Restore us again, God our Savior and put away your displeasure toward us.” Jewish history reveals God’s continued restoration. God alone restores His repentant people.
When I’ve wandered too far from the Lord I no longer feel His face shine on me. Generally it’s my unrepentant heart blotting out His restorative shining face. Sin has gotten in the way of a closer walk with Him more times than I care to count. One thing I do know, He’s there but unable to guide when sin stands in His way. Being independent in no way means I can’t depend on Him. I need Him more than He needs me. Humbling myself daily and asking for forgiveness leads to His restoration.
How is God restoring you this week?
