The apostle John finished his first letter to the believers in western Asia Minor with foundational doctrine. Faith in the incarnate Son of God begins by believing He died for every sin of man. The gift given to all that believe in the finished work of Jesus Christ is eternal life. He stated the same in John 3:36, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.” John made a contrast between those who believe and those that don’t. Those who do not believe in Jesus Christ do not “have life.” We obtain assurance from God by accepting His promise through faith in Jesus Christ.

I’ve been given eternal life, which has made facing various life changing events easier to navigate. “But I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I’ve committed unto Him against that day.” A favorite hymn of mine because Christ redeemed me “for His own.” Daily I receive assurance from God because I chose to accept Christ as my Lord and Savior.
