God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed before hand unpunished—he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present times, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.
Paul’s previous four verses reveal God’s provision for mankind. No one leads a sinless life but salvation is offered through Jesus Christ. The sacrifices offered in the past were no longer needed because Christ was the final perfect sacrifice. He atoned for the sins of all who choose to follow Him. Sin dooms all to spend eternity punished. 1 John 2:2, “He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” Faith in Jesus saves believing sinners.
Approaching Easter is a time to reflect on what Christ did for me at the cross. Though none was perfect before or after He came, all have the opportunity to receive eternal life. Being raised in a home of believers, faith in Christ was ultimately my choice. It wasn’t until later that I realized everyone did not have that same opportunity. We are called daily to share the Good News. We are all sinners in need of the Savior.
