Mark 4:11-12 NIV 2011
He told them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that, ‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven.’”
Jesus had just given the parable of the sower to the crowd gathered around him. Alone with His twelve disciples, Jesus answered their questions regarding the parable. God’s covenant people knew the “secret.” John the Baptist fulfilled Isaiah’s words in Matthew 3:2, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Jesus, Messiah, was with them. Their faith led His followers to believe. Jesus preached much like Isaiah to hearts hardened by years of hearing the words but not being a doer of God’s Word. Isaiah 6:8, “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send?’” Knowing God’s Word requires a response.
I can remember asking my grandmother to tell me a story. My mother shared many stories with me as we drove back and forth to Walla Walla, Washington where my father was rehabbing at the VA after his stroke. Sometimes we hear a friend tell the same story so many times we tune them out. That sometimes happens when we hear the same message from God’s Word. While daily studying God’s Word, I heard His call. I’m responding by sharing it.
Where is God’s Word calling you?
