Ephesians 6:1-4 NIV 2011
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on earth.”
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Paul wrote God’s Words from the Ten Commandments. Deuteronomy 5:66, “Honor your father and mother as the Lord your God has commanded you.” God promised their lives would go well as obedient children of the Lord. Godly parents modeled how they followed the Lord’s ways. Their children while walking with God would then remain focused on His ways rather than those of the world. Fathers/Parents were to parent as the Father parents His people. God calls parents to train their children by modeling lives lived for Jesus.
I never thanked my parents for raising us in a godly way. But when I became mother to our girls, I understood. I appreciated being raised in the church and thanked them both profusely. The girls were part of Sunday school and youth group with a little Young Life thrown in for good measure. At the end of the day, they each, like me, needed to choose to study God’s Word and live their lives for Christ. Now I’m training my grandchildren to live lives for Jesus.
Why does God call us to train His children?
