Romans 6:12-13 NIV 2011
Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer any part of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.
Paul offered the Romans ways to overcome slavery to sin by lives lived lacking sin’s hold upon them. Romans 6:16, “Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey…” Believers cannot serve two masters. They were called to serve God alone. Romans 12:1, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God…” Believers must die to self to be alive in Christ.
Dying to self includes persevering with others as they go through those hard places in life. I have a sister-in-Christ at Judson Park short stay rehab facility. Suffering a stroke over three years ago, she looked a bit lost, but happy to see me. Very weary after the PT staff left and tired I said I’d be back tomorrow. We had prayer together before leaving. Tomorrow we’ll begin with Scripture and prayer. God called me to re-connect with her and this is one way I will die to self.
Why does God call us to daily die to self?
Alive in Christ,
