Isaiah 40:3 NIV 2011
A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
The second half of Isaiah’s book, the book of comforts, begins in chapter 40 with “Comfort, comfort my people.” Isaiah used differing words and voices to comfort and prepare the people’s hearts. Verse three’s voice is linked in the New Testament to John the Baptist. Matthew 3:3, “This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: ‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make strait paths for him.”’” Luke 3:4 used the same verse from Isaiah. John 1:23a used John the Baptist’s words, “John replied in words of Isaiah the prophet, ‘I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness.’” God sends His messengers to prepare hearts for Jesus.
My parents were the first messengers God used to prepare my heart for Jesus. Youth leaders, camp councilors, pastors and BSF teaching Leaders have all been messengers. Many friends along the way as well lots of family members kept sharing His message. God’s Word today is my greatest companion. When I arrive at church Sundays I needn’t carry my Bible any longer. I have my trusty iPhone with my favorite Study Bible app I can use at will. God can even use technology to send messengers to prepare hearts for Jesus.
