2 Corinthians 8:2, 9:11 NIV 2011
In the midst of a very severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
Paul began these chapters by reminding the church to continue their collection of money for the distressed believers in Jerusalem. In turn they would receive overflowing blessings of the gospel for their generosity. The blessings they received would point them to be more generous. That would lead them to give thanks to God for each and every blessing. Their first act of giving themselves to the Lord is what led them to give for the Lord. Generous God calls His faithful to model His generosity to others.
Having an attitude of generosity means more than giving money or saying we should really do something. There have been times when giving of my time has been more beneficial to the body of Christ. When someone says, “I wish there was someway I could help,” I will offer them ways they can give. Members from my church in Ohio are financing their trip to Gulu, in northern Uganda on their mission trip. Each is giving generously of time and money. I will give generously of my time by praying daily for them as they share God’s True Word.
Where do you see God’s generosity?
Giving generously to Him,
