Hebrews 12:5b-6 NIV 2011
“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
Hebrew’s author continually referred to Old Testament words for instructing the Jewish Christians who knew them. With Christ as the example for enduring all opposition, they were not to lose heart and become weary. Hebrews 12:3, “Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Discipline comes from the Lord. Psalm 94:12, “Blessed is the one you discipline, Lord, the one you teach from your law.” Even though God loves His people, each needs to grow spiritually. Discipline is God’s key. Revelation 3:19, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.” God’s discipline brings supernatural spiritual growth.
One Christian author wrote, “Discipline is training that corrects, molds or perfects the mental faculties or mental character.” It was hard work to discipline our girls. Just like God has a standard for us, we had one for them. In order to discipline, we needed to be disciplined ourselves. Having walked through a few fires in my life, I’ve come through on the other side stronger in my faith. Those fires were used by God to discipline and refine me offering opportunities to grow spiritually. Daily I’m growing spiritually.
Where is God’s discipline evident?
