John 3:7-8 NIV 2011
“You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’
The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear it’s sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the spirit.”
John quoted Jesus’s reply to Nicodemus who recognized Jesus came from God. John 3:3, “Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.’” He used the wind to describe the Spirit as other Bible authors did. Ecclesiastes 11:5, “As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.” The Holy Spirit is sovereign working in the hearts of those that believe Jesus is Lord.
Paul’s final greeting to the people in Corinth is a favorite of mine. 2 Corinthians 13:14, “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.” My Uncle Art used it at worship service’s end as his pastoral blessing. Many refer to it as Trinitarian in form. It’s been my favorite because it calls God the Son, the Father and the Holy Spirit to remain with those he’d never see again. The Holy Spirit works in my heart daily.
Where’s the Spirit at work today?
