Titus 3:3b-5 NIV 2011
We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth by the Holy Spirit.
Paul wrote to Titus about caring for the church on the island of Crete. Titus was one of his convert. Titus was with Paul when he left Antioch. Paul’s words to the church at Ephesus are much the same, Ephesians 2:1, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.” Believers are alive in Christ. Salvation occurs through the mercy of God, not through human effort or accomplishments. Once saved, the Holy Spirit indwells the heart of each new believer. Those who choose to follow Jesus are washed, reborn and saved through Christ alone.
Any time I spend with my sisters, I’m refreshed and renewed because we share family stories and history. That’s the same feeling after experiencing sweet fellowship with sisters and brothers in Christ. We aren’t bonded by family history but by our faith in Christ. Paul consistently pointed out to all believers in his letters the truth of Jesus. All believers share His story: Jesus died to save us from our sins. It doesn’t matter when we began to follow Jesus because we’re washed, reborn and saved by Him.
