Joel 2:23-24 NIV 2011

Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. The threshing floors will be filled with grain; the vats will overflow with new wine and oil.

The book of Joel warned the people of Judah regarding God’s future judgment. They needed to choose; continued rebellion or contrite repentance. Through locust and drought there was no rest until they returned to the Lord. Joel 2:13, “Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God…” God was faithful to His people. Deuteronomy 11:14, “then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains…” God would provide just as he did for Naomi and Ruth in Ruth 1:22. Those who look to the Lord have hope for the present and future.

It is unfathomable for me to live without the eternal hope we have as followers of Christ. Living on this side of the cross, I know so much more than God’s people of the Old Testament. The Holy Spirit dwells within me daily guiding my life. As I leave for our prayer meeting this evening, there is hope in being with brothers and sisters in Christ praying for one another. Looking to the Lord, we have hope for the present and future.

What is your hope for the present?

Hopeful sinners,

S
