Revelation 7:17 NIV 2011
“For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’
‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”
John began chapter seven describing the 144,000 from the tribes of Israel that will be sealed as servants of God. He ended the chapter describing the shepherd. The kings of the Bible would often refer to themselves as shepherds of their people. Psalm 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” David referred to the Lord as his shepherd. During the tribulation, the Lamb will lead the people. John used Jesus’ quote in John 4:14b, “Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” God will even take care of the tears of His own people. Jesus, the Lamb of God, is the Great Shepherd.
I remember a Thursday morning pausing at the door of the 5/6-year-old BSF Children’s class. Revelation 7:17 was the Bible verse for the Children’s Program that morning. They were all marching and saying, “The Lamb will be their shepherd! Revelation 7:17.” Each had a turn to be the shepherd as they looked for their scattered sheep. They brought the sheep back into the circle and began saying the verse once again. The Lamb of God is the Great Shepherd who finds His sheep.
