John 15:16, Ephesians 1:4 NIV 2011
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.
For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
John quoted Jesus’ summary of His illustration using the vine and the branches. The disciples did not make a choice. Jesus chose them for a purpose; to bear the fruit He had given them. God used each for His good purposes. Jesus was the vine and they were the branches. John 15:4, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” Many of Paul’s letters detail divine election as a common thread. God chose them. 2 Thessalonians 2:13b, “God chose you as firstfruits to be saved.” Everyone is created to make a commitment to the Lord God.
Merriam Webster’s definition of election: predestination to eternal life. Each of us has been created to make a commitment to the Lord. That was God’s plan in the beginning. Some come at a tender age while others struggle through life searching. There are even those who make the choice just prior to leaving this world and still others that never do. I chose following Jesus in my youth. I’m thankful daily God created me for commitment to Him.
