Matthew 5:44-45 NIV 2011
“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”
Matthew’s gospel continually revealed Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy of the Messiah. Isaiah 7:14, “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” He gave them God’s model to follow. Job 42:10, “After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.” God calls us to be more like Him by showing His love to all people. Jesus calls His saints to love their enemies and pray for those that persecute them.
Full disclosure, these are two “asks” I struggle with in the moment. After I step back and think about all the bonehead, ridiculous things I’ve done in the past that God’s forgiven me for, I see His great grace and change my attitude. It’s a daily, step-by-step process that has taken me too many years to arrive at this point. He’s refining and designing me to be more like Him. We pray as the body of Christ weekly for our enemies as well as those that persecute us at prayer meeting.
Who needs our prayers today?
His saints together,
