Jonah 3:3a, 4-5 NIV 2011
Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
Jonah was called by God to preach against the wickedness in Nineveh. Jonah 1:3, “But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish.” While inside the belly of a huge fish for three days and nights Jonah called out to the Lord who answered his prayer. God’s second call to Jonah was met with obedience as he proclaimed, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” They believed God, proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth. God saw their response and relented. He didn’t bring destruction but extended His great mercy to Nineveh.
God is the Great Missionary.
The Gospel isn’t just for Christians in the church it’s for everyone. Do we stay in our comfort zone rather than share it when we are comfortable? We need to reach out to others. These were some of my notes from the sermon this morning on John 4:1-30, 39-42, the Samaritan woman at the well. Though Jonah eventually answered God’s call, I need to answer God’s call daily by sharing His Truth even if I’m uncomfortable. God is my ever-present Great Missionary model.
Who needs to hear God’s Truth today?
Ready to share,
