Matthew 14:29-31a NIV 2011

“Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.

The Gospels of John and Mark include Jesus’ calming the seas and walking on water. Matthew alone included Peter’s account. Matthew 14:28, “‘Lord, if it’s you,’ Peter replied, ‘tell me to come to you on the water.’” Peter was focused on Jesus. He was not looking at what was swirling around him when he left the boat. As quickly as he got out of the boat and began his walk to Jesus, he looked away. Fear took over and he slowly slipped into the sea. He cried out and Jesus caught him. Eyes focused on Jesus maintains and increases faith.

On our flight this morning, the safety briefing included the location of life rafts in case of emergency. I smile now as I type because I have my life raft with me at all times, Jesus. Knowing the rest of Peter’s story, his ups and downs has always been an encouragement in my faith. He walked and talked with Jesus and yet he still faltered just like me. Being a follower of Jesus Christ, the bar is always high. It’s my daily goal to keep faithfully focused on Jesus.

What rough seas are causing you to sink?

Focused on Jesus,
