1 John 2:12-13 NIV 2011
I am writing to you, children because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.
John purposed his letter to the churches in western Asia Minor to caution them about doctrine that was not grounded in faith alone through Christ alone. Their salvation was secure in Christ. 1 John 2:1, “But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” They would be overcomers through their faith in Jesus Christ. 1 John 4:4, “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than he one who is in the world.” All believers overcome through Jesus Christ.
Six years ago I heard a song that spoke to me on Christian radio, “Overcomer.” I had a dear friend going through some medical challenges and I shared it with her. It became our “fight song.” I’ve shared it with other’s going through challenges themselves. “You’re an overcomer, staying to fight ‘til the final round. You’re not going under, ‘cause God’s holding you right now.” The Apostle John was saying the same thing; we have Jesus Christ to help us overcome. As believers in Jesus each of us can overcome anything.
What do we need to overcome today?
