1 Thessalonians 5:16-22 NIV 2011

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.

Paul gave his church in Thessalonica key steps to develop a positive attitude: be joyful, keep praying and be thankful in all situations. These attitudes were to be a part of their day-to-day lives as followers of Christ. He then added two “do not’s” as safeguards for their lives. By walking in the Spirit and examining what was being taught, they would remain on the Lord’s path. Paul’s words to the Romans were a bit more succinct, Romans 12:9, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.” Walking with Jesus includes a joyful heart, prayer and endless thanksgiving.

Paul knew attitudes influenced behavior in believers. The same is true today. By examining the words I use daily, I see they directly impact my attitude. When I use words of encouragement and love it reflects a joyful heart. Philippians 2:14, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing.” Making prayer an important part of my day also keeps His joy within me. Remembering all I have in Christ brings me to offering thanksgiving for my salvation. Focusing on these actions are key components of walking with Jesus.

How are we encouraging those we love?

Jesus focused together,
