1 Samuel 16:7 NIV 2011
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Samuel chose Saul as the first king of Israel. 1 Samuel 9:2, “Kish had a son named Saul, as handsome a young man as could be found anywhere in Israel, and he was a head taller than anyone else.” Saul was not the king for Israel. God wanted Samuel to choose another. Like God, Saul needed to look beyond how the young man appeared to who he truly was. Psalm 147:11, “The Lord delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.” God gave him specific instructions. God looks beyond the person and sees what’s in the heart.
A question was at the center of my conversation a few weeks ago. “Why would God choose that person?” We finally agreed God is sovereign and knows what He’s doing. Listening to the sermon this morning I received additional clarification to answer that question. No human will thwart His plan. Though I didn’t look to God’s Word for the answer that day, today I remembered Jeremiah 29:11. God has a plan and daily we can trust Him. God looks beyond individuals because He knows their heart.
What plan does God have for you right now?
