Matthew 21:28-30 NIV 2011

“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’

“ ‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.

“Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.”

Matthew records Jesus’ parable of the two sons. Both were asked to perform the same task. It would appear that both were disobedient. The first flatly refused. The second said yes but did not follow through. Though defiant, the first had a change of heart and did what his father asked him to do. The action of God’s people speaks louder than their words. God through the Holy Spirit can work in the defiant hearts of His people. God is able to renew the heart and save those who turn away.

After hearing the sermon today at church, I needed to let my light shine for the right reason. Like the Pharisees to whom Jesus spoke, I’m not to judge anyone on outward appearances. I do not know their heart, but God does. When I daily focus on Him, my day takes a much smoother path. But one crazy person in a parking lot can instantly change my focus. Because He renews my heart, He’s able to save any who turn away.

Why does He renew our hearts?

Focused on Him,
