Proverbs 15:13, 17:22, 18:14 NIV 2011
A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
The human spirit can endure in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?
Wise men wrote Proverbs for God’s people. Each stressed the importance of wise living and fear of the Lord. Following a seductive path of foolishness was never God’s design. A happy heart gave them life. Proverbs 14:30, “A heart at peace gives life to the body…” A heart filled with cheer brought health and peace. Proverbs 3:8, “This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.” David knew God was the only answer. Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” God creates a new heart in those that trust Him.
Jesus is the only answer to a crushed spirit whether we are sixteen or sixty. Isaiah 53:5, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities, the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” As saved sinners, we can turn to God daily in prayer with confidence He will hear when we cry out to Him. We surrender our hearts and spirits to God the Father. I trust God as He renews my spirit creating a new heart.
