Deuteronomy 4:1b-2 NIV 2011
Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land the Lord, the God of your ancestors is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.
The Israelites stood on the precipice of the Promise Land. The Lord gave Moses words for him and words for God’s people. After reiterating God’s generous previsions and patience, he boldly reminds them to be obedient and follow the Lord’s Commandments. Leviticus 18:5, “Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.” God’s people were called to obey while appropriating God’s Laws as they took possession of Canaan. Leviticus 22:31, “Keep my commands and follow them, I am the Lord.” Those who follow Christ are keeping God’s commands.
One Sunday morning in the late 1950’s our Sunday School class read the Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:1-17. They were daunting and I wasn’t sure I would ever be able to keep all of them, let alone remember each one. Meeting Jesus at eleven years old, I discovered I needed to follow Him and the rest would become clear. God desires a relationship with us. Following Jesus daily through prayer and study, my relationship grows. I keep the Father’s commands by following the Son.
