Deuteronomy 11:18-19a, 20 NIV 2011
Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Israel followed God’s Word by making phylacteries for their foreheads and a wooden or metal mezuzah holding passages of Scripture placed on doorframes. Matthew 23:5a, “Everything they do is done for people to see: they make their phylacteries.” Unfortunately they missed the point. Moses again stated God’s direction. God’s Word was to be a part of their everyday lives, which included the lives of their children. He repeated what he said in Deuteronomy 6:6-7a. “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children.” God only wanted obedience. Hearts fixed on the Father focus His faithful family firmly on Him.
Focusing on all the different times I’ve seed the Father at work in my life, I can only smile. Storing God’s Word in my heart is my consistent reminder He is ever present in my life.
