Psalm 3:3-5 NIV 2011

But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high. I call out to the Lord, and he answers me from his holy mountain. I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me.

David knew God intimately and his past experiences offered him confidence the Lord heard his plea. God was Abram’s shield as well. Genesis 15:1b, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” A shield is a piece of armor, protection or defense. Psalm 7:10, “My shield is God Most High who saves the upright in heart.” David knew God through His unfailing answered prayers. David slept under God’s watch. Psalm 5:8, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” The Lord saves, protects and sustains His servants.

Not too many years ago a very dear friend was in the battle for her life. Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, many in her family were not hopeful. When I learned of her plight, I dropped by unannounced prompted by the Lord. She greeted me at the door and didn’t look well. The Light of Jesus was off. I boldly told her she needed to turn on her Light. After praying for her, that became our daily battle cry. It’s been my privilege to pray and witness God save her life.

How is the Lord sustaining you today?

The Lord saves,
