Romans 12:8-10 NIV 2011
If it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.
Paul knew loving relationships were not easy to navigate. He offered a kinder gentler approach to how godly love is shown. Encouragement meant giving uplifting words and guidance to give feely of time and talent. The key: seeking God for His model of love. 1 John 4:19, “We love because he first loved us.” Honor is rooted in a heart filled with love. Philippians 2:3, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourself.” God calls believers to kindness, honor and genuine love.
Full disclosure, there are times daily the kindness meter in my life is zero. You may ask my husband or daughters. Something inside snaps and a shrew takes over my mouth. Galatians 5:22-23 has been my go to Scripture. My wedding vows included love, honor and obey. In anger, at times I’m a complete failure at honoring my husband. Genuine sincere love comes easy for those in my circle but for others, not so much. God’s still working because He’s called and equipped me to do all three.
