James 1:12, 5:11a NIV 2011
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered.
James uses words similar to Jeremiah’s quote from Psalm 1:1 in 17:7, “But blessed is the one who trust in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.” Jesus used the word blessed in Matthew 5:3-12, the Beatitudes. Matthew 5:10, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Blessed here means spiritual joy and well-being for all who’ve been saved through Jesus Christ. Believers will not be shielded from trials but must persevere. Hebrews 10:36, “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” Perseverance creates character and blesses believers.
There have been times when I’ve needed to persevere. While sometimes a real stretch for me, looking back I am able to see God has used each time to grow me as a child of the King. One of those times a sister encouraged me with 1 Peter 1:7. We laughed when I said, “I hate the smell of singed hair.” I know whom I believe and where I will spend eternity. Daily, I count it all joy because they’re what makes me, me.
How does God work through our suffering?
