Lamentation 2:13, 17 NIV 2011
What can I say for you? What can I compare you, Daughter Jerusalem? To what can I liken you, that I may comfort you, Virgin Daughter Zion? Your wound is deep as the sea. Who can heal you?
The Lord has done what he planned; he has fulfilled his word, which he decreed long ago.
Ekah, (“How… !”) is the Hebrew title for Lamentations. It is filled with Jewish laments after the Babylonians destroyed their homeland and precious city, Jerusalem. Five laments reveal the author’s understanding of God’s divine judgment upon His people. Lamentations 2:1, “How the Lord has covered Daughter Zion with the cloud of his anger! He has hurled down the splendor of Israel from heaven to earth…” God’s judgment came upon His people and land because of their ungodly choices. Isaiah 55:11, “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return empty.” God is the Cry for Israel.
The more I study God’s Word, the more I lament the direction our nation has taken. Once a great nation proud of its Christian underpinnings, we have drifted far from that anchor. Stores used to be closed on Sunday so all could go to church. Children sang Christmas songs at Christmas programs. There was no spring break it was Easter week. We stood daily for the flag salute and everyone learned the National Anthem. God is the Cry for US.
What causes you to lament?
