Exodus 20:1, Psalm 19:7a, 119:142 NIV 2011
And God spoke all these words.
The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true.
One commentator wrote, “words: a technical term for ‘(covenant) stipulations’ in ancient Near East.” What follows is God’s divine law, which has become know as the “Ten Commandments”. Deuteronomy 4:13, “He declared to you his covenant, the Ten Commandments, which he commanded you to follow and then wrote them on two stone tablets.” God refreshes those who abide by His law. Psalm 23:3a, “He refreshes my soul.” God’s perfect laws are righteous, trustworthy and eternal. Psalm 119:138, 160 “The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy… All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.” God gave His law as the perfect standard.
God gave Israel the law as a plumb line. We have Jesus Christ as our perfect standard to live by daily. We are unable to keep every law but it’s the standard we’re to work toward. I’m a sinner but the precious blood of Jesus Christ covers my sins. The New Testament reveals how to live godly lives. Romans 7:14, “We know that the law is spiritual but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.” God’s law is the perfect standard for this sinner.
How does the Lord refresh sinner’s souls?
Not slaves to sin,
