Hebrews 12:5-6 NIV 2011
And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son?
It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”
Hebrews author offered encouragement; persevere in the face of hardship. A footnote in my Bible gives reference to Proverbs 3:11-12. “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” Being reminded all that Jesus suffered on behalf of all sinners; believers were not to grow weary as they persevered. John added repentance to the process in Revelation 3:19, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.” God disciplines those He loves.
As a child I remember being disciplined by my parents but always knew they loved me even when I was defiant. Being a parent myself, I recall disciplining our girls and only doing it because I loved them. There was nothing they could ever do that would change my love for them. When the Lord has needed to discipline me, those have been times when my faith walk has been strengthened through repentance. Like a good parent, God only disciplines those He loves.
What is learned through God’s discipline?
Loved by Him daily,
