Then the Lord raised up judges, who saved them out of the hands of these raiders.
“So may all your enemies perish, Lord! But may all who love you be like the sun when it rises in its strength.”
Then the land had peace forty years.
The book of Judges begins after Joshua’s death and before Israel’s cry for a king. Deborah ruled for forty years. She was the third of six major judges of Israel. Judges 4:4, “Now Deborah, a prophet, the wife of Lappidoth, was leading Israel at the time.” When Israel walked with the Lord, there was peace. The Israelites returned to their wicked ways. Judges 6:1, “The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years he gave them into the hands of the Midianites. God remains with those who remain with Him.
Judges 5:31 was my “Promises & Blessings” Scripture verse for today as I flipped the devotional calendar. Reading through the book of Judges shows me that we are daily one step away from remaining close to the Lord. I look at the Israelites and wonder how they could be so foolish. Then I remember how foolish I’ve been over and over again. We’re all the same. Only through the power of the Holy Spirit and God’s Word will we change. God remains with me when I remain with HIm.
