Psalm 139:17-18 NIV 2011
How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.
Psalm 139 is one of 8 psalms of David “prayers framed by praise.” Psalm 138:14, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderful made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 145:21, “My mouth will speak in praise of the Lord. Let every creature praise his holy name for ever and ever.” David knew as Job did, God’s thoughts are incomprehensible. Job 5:9, “He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.” David knew God is eternal. Psalm 3:5, “I lie down and sleep. I wake again because the Lord sustains me.” God’s thoughts are precious and infinite.
When a day begins with doubt or fear, God’s Word is the perfect place to find direction and rest. David is an example of one that came from nothing, had everything, made a poor choice but found his way back to the Lord. Paul’s words in Romans 8:39, “…nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Remembering God when I wake up and speaking to Him before I sleep, I believe His thoughts are precious and infinite.
How does God sustain us daily?
