Matthew 27:59-60 NIV 2011
Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.
Joseph of Arimathea received Jesus’ body. Luke 23:50-51a, “Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, who had not consented to their decision and action.” He wrapped and placed it in the tomb after His death on the cross. All that followed fulfilled Scripture. Acts 13:29, “When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb.” The tomb was then secured. Matthew 27:68, “Pilate answered. ‘Go make the tomb as secure as you know how.’” Death did not hold Jesus.
Anticipating Easter, reflecting upon the reason Jesus died refreshes me because His resurrection occurred in light of my own sinful life. Jesus won the victory over death and through that victory all those who profess Him as their savior do as well. All believing Christians receive the gift of eternal life in Christ. He paid the price for my sins and the empty tomb on Easter disclose that reality. Revelation 22:20, “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’” Jesus returned and will return.
